Family Xenodermatidae (6 genera, 17 species) a small group of peculiar snakes distributing in Disjunct, Assam, northern Indochina and adjacent China to Japan, and peninsular Malaysia, Sumatra, Java, and Borneo. The numerous (>20) small maxillary teeth distinguish them from other snakes. They are generally living in moist forest habitats with small (0.55 m)-to-moderate (0.8 m)-sized. Limited data suggest they are feed on vertebrates and oviparous, but more evidences are needed to uncover their secrets.
We estimated the emergence of Xenodermatidae at ~67 Mya using fossil calibrations. Analysis support all remaining Colubroidea is the sister group of Xenodermatidae.
