Typhlopidae family contains 10 genera 252 species that occur in nearly all tropical regions all over the world. Their body size range from 0.14 m to 0.95 m. Teeth are present in maxillaries but absent in mandible. Pelvic remnants are observed in the trunk musculature and left oviduct is degenerated among these species. Their eyes are reduced to small eyespots concealed under scale and left oviduct is absent.
Typhlopids are the most species enriched blind snakes that present in variety of habitats from near desert to lowland rainforest and are all fossorial. Termites, ants, and their larvae and eggs seem to be the major food of these snakes. So far, they are all oviparous based on reports published, but large part of reproduction concerning them is still unknown.
We estimated the emergence of Typhlopidae at ~110 Mya using fossil calibrations. Analysis support Leptotyphlopidae is the sister group of Typhlopidae.
