Viperidae is constituted of 36 genera, 305 species distributing all over the world excepting Papuaustralia and oceanic islands. Viperids are venomous snakes with very long tubular fangs and distinctly triangular heads. Some (species in Crotalinae) have infrared receptors: well-developed loreal pit and are infrared sensitive snakes. Viperids are 0.30-3.75 m in length and mainly feed on vertebrates including small mammals, amphibians and reptiles as well as fish and frogs. They are either viviparous or oviparous that occur in forest to desert habitats and from equatorial to subarctic regions. Although mainly terrestrial, some are semiaquatic and arboreal.
Analysis confirm Pareatidae, Homalopsidae, Colubridae, Lamprophiidae and Elapidae are the sister groups of Viperidae.
